What should I major in?

cindyw0814 asked:

So I decided I am going back to school in january! I want to become an Event Planner but my college does not offer event planning as a major. What could I major in that would help give me experience in that field? I was thinking along the lines of Public Relations but I’m not sure if that would help.

If you are planning on running your own business, I would definitely take some business and accounting classes.

Marketing–it’ll give you good base for promotions, business-sense, etc. Plus, if you decide that Event Planning isn’t something you want to pursue, you’ll have the business background to fall on.

I think your original idea is correct. Moreover, the last forecasts I saw predict that public relations will be fairly robust in terms of growth and demand for the next decade, so your employment opportunities will be good even if event planner doesn’t come up at first.

You will want to use electives to get some course work in business- or marketing- or accounting-related courses that aren’t required already for your major. I’ve also found that threatrical stage managers make wonderful event planners (they are good at scheduling and directing people, organizing tasks, and keeping several “balls in the air” at once) so consider studying that if there’s a course available.

A degree in event planning? Ha!

Major in hospitality. Some jobs in hotel management and restaurant management will open up to you as well and event planning can complement such a job. Good hospitality programs: Cornell, U of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, Ohio State, Boston U, Purdue-West Lafayette, U Delaware, Michigan State, U Nebraska, UMass-Amherst, U New Hampshire, U of South Carolina-Columbia, Florida State, U Kentucky

Tried to make the list as comprehensive as I could, hopefully you can go to the one nearest to you or something if you can’t go far away.
